Helps cover hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A if they’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and certain medical supplies. Part B has a monthly premium.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one option from private insurers. Often bundles hospital, medical, and drug coverage and may include extras like dental or vision.

Part D

Prescription Drugs

Helps pay for prescription medications. Offered through private plans approved by Medicare; costs and formularies vary by plan.

MediGap

Medicare Supplement

Medigap is a private health insurance policy that covers the "gaps" in Original Medicare (Part A and B), such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage

Deciding between a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) and Medicare Advantage isn’t always easy. Everyone’s health needs, budget, and lifestyle are different, so the best choice depends on what matters most to you. It’s normal to feel a little pressure when making this decision, but you don’t have to feel overwhelmed.

I’ve shared the differences before, but I recently came across a helpful chart from UnitedHealthcare that makes the comparison much easier to understand.

        Here’s the chart

When to enroll

  • Initial Enrollment: 7-month window around your 65th birthday.

  • Annual Enrollment: October 15 – December 7 — make changes for the next year.

  • Special Enrollment: Life events like moving or losing other coverage can trigger special enrollment periods.

Extra Help Programs

If your income or resources are limited, you may qualify for programs that reduce premiums, deductibles, or prescription costs. We can help you check eligibility and apply.
